Hair Transplant: Procedure, Risks, Aftercare, and Cost

By The Sanur | August 28, 2024

Hair loss can be a distressing issue for many individuals, impacting their self-confidence and overall well-being. While there are various treatments available to address hair loss, hair transplantation has emerged as a popular and effective solution for restoring hair growth in areas affected by baldness or thinning hair.

In this article, we will delve into the intricacies of hair transplantation, including how the procedure is performed, who may be suitable candidates, as well as the benefits and considerations associated with it. By gaining a better understanding of hair transplantation, patients considering this procedure can make more informed decisions and potentially achieve the desired results they seek.

Hair Transplant Procedure

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure used to restore hair to bald or thinning scalp parts that need more hair.

This procedure is typically performed by a skilled and experienced surgeon or hair restoration specialist.

The majority of people simply require a scalp anesthetic that makes them unconscious during the entire procedure. To aid with relaxation, some patients additionally take a small amount of sedative.

Before beginning the operation, your dermatologist will first remove the healthy hairs. Your dermatologist may choose to remove individual hairs or cut a strip of skin with healthy hairs off your scalp in order to give you results that seem natural.

Although it takes much longer, the second method spares your scalp from having a long, narrow scar. If you're into buzz cuts or other close-cropped hairstyles, this may be helpful.

Technicians must prepare the hairs that have been taken, and the surgeon must prepare your scalp for the transplant before they can implant the new hairs.

A team of two to three hair transplant specialists may assist in transplanting healthy hairs into the area that requires hair, depending on the total quantity of hairs to be replaced. Your scalp will be wrapped and you will receive instructions for at-home care once all of the transplanted hair has been placed.

How Long Does the Hair Transplant?

A hair transplant procedure typically takes four to eight hours. But the procedure would take longer depending on how much hair that is placed.

The procedure's duration may also be determined by the hair transplant technique. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) are the two forms of hair grafting techniques.

Due to the specific removal of each hair follicle unit using a specialized tool, the FUE procedure typically takes longer. In the meantime, a skin strip containing hair follicle units is used in the FUT procedure.

Treatment After Hair Transplant Surgery

Hair transplantation is an outpatient procedure, so patients can go home the same day. After hair transplant surgery, the scalp will feel soft, so it will be wrapped in a bandage for 1-2 days.

Your doctor may prescribe painkillers or antibiotics to help reduce pain and prevent infection.

Get enough rest and avoid strenuous activities for several days after the procedure. Avoid sports or activities that can increase the risk of injury to the head area.

Avoid washing or combing hair in the grafted scalp area for several days after the transplant. Afterwards, the patient may be able to wash the hair gently using a shampoo recommended by the doctor.

In most cases, the results of a hair transplant can be considered a permanent solution to the problem of baldness or thinning hair.

Most patients can see results between 6 and 9 months after the procedure. In some other patients, results can be seen for up to 12 months.

It is important to note that the transplanted hair may fall out between 1 and 2 months after the procedure. Entering the third month, hair will look thin. This condition is quite normal.

Risks of Hair Transplant

Hair transplant surgery typically has temporary side effects. On your scalp, or where the new hair is located, you might experience the following problems:

  • Itching on your scalp.
  • Pain.
  • Infection.
  • Numbness.
  • Swelling.
  • Tightness.
